Mom, I Lost My Phone: The New Number Scam

A message from an unknown number claims to be your son or daughter with a new number. After a few warm sentences comes the request: to transfer money urgently, because they cannot access their own account.

How it starts

A message arrives from an unknown number, usually on WhatsApp or by SMS: Hi Mom, I lost my phone, this is my new number. Save it. The first message does not ask for anything. It only builds trust.

How it works

After the parent replies, the attacker continues with a short conversation and introduces a small distress: the new phone is not yet connected to the banking app, or there is an urgent payment that must be made today. He asks the parent to make a bank transfer for him, and promises to pay it back tomorrow. He pushes gently and asks them not to tell anyone, so that no one stops the parent and exposes the scam.

What the scammer wants

The attacker wants a fast bank transfer, usually to the account of another person he calls a friend or a business owner. He counts on a worried parent not stopping to check. The faster you transfer, and the fewer questions you ask, the better the scam works.

Common phrases

  • Hi Mom, I lost my phone, this is my new number
  • Save the number and delete the old one
  • I cannot log in to the banking app from the new device
  • There is an urgent payment I have to make today
  • Transfer it to me and I will pay you back tomorrow
  • Do not tell Dad, I do not want him to worry

Red flags

  • A message from a supposed family member that comes from a new, unfamiliar number
  • A request for money a short time after the first message
  • A reason that explains why they cannot talk on the phone or meet
  • A request to keep the matter secret
  • Pressure to transfer now, today, quickly

What to do now

  • Do not transfer money. Stop for a moment
  • Call the family member on their old, familiar number, or meet them, and check directly
  • If they do not answer on the old number, ask a question only they could answer
  • Tell another family member. The request for secrecy is part of the scam
  • If you already transferred money, contact the bank and the police immediately. The sooner you act, the better the chance of stopping the transfer

Example scenario

Miriam gets a WhatsApp message from a number she does not recognize: Hi Mom, my phone fell in water, this is a temporary number. She replies, worried. After a few messages he writes that he needs to pay a supplier today, but the banking app does not work yet on the new device, and asks her to transfer 4,000 shekels and he will pay it back tomorrow. Miriam transfers it. Only in the evening, when she calls her son's old number, does she find out that he never wrote to her at all.

Prevention tips

  • Agree with your family in advance: an urgent request for money in a message is always verified with a phone call before any transfer
  • If a new number claims to be a family member, call the old number to confirm
  • Always be suspicious of a request that comes with a request to keep a secret
  • Talk about this scam with older parents in the family, they are a favorite target
  • Remember that no real family member will be hurt by you checking before you transfer money

Full description

The new number scam aims straight at the heart. It does not use sophisticated technology, it uses emotion: a parent's worry for their child. The attacker does not need to know much. It is enough to write Hi Mom or Hi Dad, claim the phone was lost and this is a new number, and the parent already fills in the rest. The scam has spread widely in Israel because it is simple, cheap for the attacker, and works on good people who simply want to help their child.
